Chemical Self-Building Chips – A New Way to Manufacture CPUs and GPUs
Imagine you have magic LEGO pieces.
You don't place each LEGO by hand.
Instead, you pour a special liquid onto a table, and the LEGO pieces automatically find the correct places and connect together.
Step 1
Make a simple first layer (the foundation).
Step 2
Pour Chemical A.
This chemical knows exactly where it should stick on the first layer. It moves by itself until the pattern is complete.
Then you make it hard (solid).
Step 3
Pour Chemical B.
Chemical B doesn't care about the first layer. It only understands the pattern made by Chemical A.
It automatically builds the next layer.
Then make it hard.
Step 4
Pour Chemical C.
It looks only at Layer B and builds the next layer.
Then make it hard again.
Keep repeating
Each new chemical looks only at the layer below it.
It builds the next layer by itself.
After every layer, you lock it so it cannot move anymore.
Eventually, after many layers, the whole CPU or GPU is finished.
Why is this different?
Today, factories use extremely expensive machines to draw every tiny transistor one by one.
Idea says:
Don't draw every tiny part. Let chemistry build each layer automatically.
The layer below becomes the guide for the layer above.
So instead of machines doing all the hard work, the chemicals do the hard work themselves.
The biggest challenge
The chemicals must be smart enough to:
- build only in the correct places,
- stop when the layer is finished,
- not damage old layers,
- not mix with nearby regions,
- make almost zero mistakes.
If scientists could invent chemicals that can do this reliably, it could become a completely new way of manufacturing computer chips
